I just recently downloaded GIMP, and hope to use it as my photo editor in the future.

Not the world's most intuitive interface, it takes some getting used to.

Any hints from other GIMP users?

Found a couple of tutorials that should help online. For a free program, this thing sure has a lot of features.

So how much harddrive space does it's file system take up?  My Serif PhotoPlus X2 sits at over 900 files, 200Mb.

The entire directory takes up 85MB for its 1700+ files

Cool.  85Mb sounds like a more managable download than 200!

Hmmm... my PS CS3 directory is 1.12 GB with 10,315 files in 1,233 folders!

That includes Adobe Bridge, Stock Photo, Utilities, Help and Device Central.  And I have a goodly selection of Plug-ins loaded.

Maybe this is the reason why the C: drive groans when being powered up?

Eric;

Are your photos in that directory or is the 1+ gig all Photoshop?

It's all Photoshop, Troop.

Photos are stored in other folders on other drives which, of as last check, take up about 33GB.

Which leads to another question that I'll open as a new topic.

I use Gimp almost exclusively.  I have ever since I stopped using Windows and started using Linux about 6 years ago.  It will run some PS plug-ins and is a highly-comprehensive, very flexible program.

Choaga, GIMP is like CS4 to me; I would need to spend a lot of time at it to get proficient at it.

So for right now, I'm going to try my hand at Lightzone and play with GIMP later when I have more time.
